Alternative Funerals

Horse drawn hearse Many people have very specific ideas about what style of funeral they would like for themselves. For some, it is something very traditional and Victorian - top hats, horses and plumes. This is the style of service for which funeral directors have become more recognised, but some people prefer something a little different. Perhaps a burial in a woodland or natural burial ground with a cardboard coffin? Or perhaps a funeral where no one wears black or maybe even a funeral with a Jazz Band in place of an Organist?

A common misconception is that Funeral Directors will only perform the former style of service and not the latter. The truth is we are Funeral Directors, and whether the style of service you would like is traditional or alternative, we are here to do it. We are here to help and to make sure you get the funeral you want.

The term funeral comes from the Medieval Latin ‘funeralis’, meaning 'torch lit procession' and the modern translation of the word now simply means the ceremony held after death and the final act of committal, whether by burial, cremation or any other means.

So Funeral Director does not have to mean sombre men in top hats with black crepe drapes flowing down their backs. It doesn’t have to mean a Victorian horse drawn hearse with black plumes rising high above the horses heads, unless that is what you would like.

What it does mean is that if you want a ceremony and committal that befits the loved one you are saying farewell to, we are here to help you. All you need to do is ask.
