How do you register a death?

  • The Death must be registered with the department of “Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages” in the district where the death occurred.
  • Registration can take place as soon as the medical certificate cause of death has been signed by the GP or Medical Examiner who will send the certificate by email to the Registry Office.
  • For the Plymouth district you will be contacted by the Registrar to arrange the appointment.
  • For the West Devon District, you can telephone 0345 155 1002 to make an appointment.
  • If the death has been referred to the Coroner, the procedure differs and we will advise you accordingly.
